Anna Dasgupta - Mid-Term Assignment

Response to Prompt No. 3 - Repetition

Small Talk

Hey man, I hope you’re well!
Thanks for asking, friend!
I’m better than well I’m swell.

Hey man, I hope you’re well!
Geez, kinda wanna kill myself,
(On the ground, a single empty shell)

Hey man, I hope you’re well!
Do you hear these pimples,
Sounding my vanity’s death knell?!

Hey man, I hope you’re well!
Meh, just insecurities and anxiety,
A cute container for a mobile hell.

Hey man, I hope you’re well
GEEZ LOUISE! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO YELL
THIS IS THE WRONG NUMBER
THE WELLES MOVED OUT A LONG TIME AGO.

  1. I liked the poem titled "small talk". It is just so different. I like language of the poem. Keep writing.
Also the first graphic response, is quite interesting. one because it is relatable. second is how you have showed the zoomed phone screen and the metro. Basically the visuals, I felt are well presented.

    1. Thank you for your comment, Swati! V. kind of you! With the comic the phone screen panel is the way it is because I was trying to draw the entire comic from my own perspective, thanks again!

  2. Anna, you are such a pro at graphics! I loved it mannn! The zoomed visual of cellphone having a picture clicked in real-time is superb. Also, is it Vikram Sir in last two panels? :P If yes, he's aptly portrayed. The poem "An Email to Nirvana" is so crisp & short yet extensive (when you try to figure out the meaning) that it just blows up your mind. I really want you to present your thoughts here about this poem in detail.
    Great efforts! :)

    1. Chayanika! Hardly a pro but I do enjoy making comics a lot. It IS Vikram Sir! I am so glad you noticed it, this happened in his class last semester :D
Thoughts about 'An E-mail to Nirvana' includes a little bit of regret at having named the poem that! I say that because the last line says "be right back", which is the language of instant messages and not e-mails, sigh! The poem is about a person who can be counted as a 'working-class hero', somebody who does what they do to support their family or lifestyle. They may not necessarily hate their job and they may do it for the great pay but it may come at the cost of feeling miserable. It is also based on the little knowledge of meditation i have. While meditating is about observing your breath it also talks about how one must be a detached observer of all happiness and sadness in order to make peace with life as it is, which is very difficult to do. I tried to show that in the last two lines though, where while the narrator is willing to "swallow life", he/she gets distracted by their material need to go and smoke!
Many thanks for this comment, Chayanika ! :D

  5. Hi Anna, I don't know why but the caps lock at the end of "Small talk" made me vision a pissed off, old English lady talking into an outdated model of a home telephone 😂 It was hilarious for me. I loved the detailing you put in your visuals especially with the zoomed in image on the mobile screen. Fab idea!

  6. While looking at your coloured panels, I am also able to see the artist in it (solely because I know you). And I think it’s brillian when the reader/viewer can relate in that manner.
    Well drawn! :’)

  7. Anna, your illustrations are good and calming! I really liked the narratives you presented. They make you go through so many emotions and I go back to them again and again. I read the strip again and again. The detailing part of the background is what amazes me so much and that is another reason why i like these so much.

  10. Hi Anna!
Your comic strips were an absolute delight to read! Small talk is a fun poem, with its use of the slangs. There's a poem by Guante of the same title which tries to highlight the need to move beyond small talk in casual conversation. I think you might like it!
