Mid Term Assignment

1.

 Hussain
________

you shed
your blood

every Muharram
in my name

hurt yourself
over and over
while chanting
Ya Hussain

did you ever stop
and wonder
how
a man
who willingly
sacrificed his family
for humanity
could ever
support such
barbarity

how
a man
who always
helped others
could ever
appreciate
the dripping
of thousand's
blood
into gutters

how
a man
who surrendered
everything
to salvage
Islam
could ever
approve of
turning
it into a
tamasha

 Medusa
_______

ravished
broken
ashamed

my vow
was snatched

my body
defiled

and who
paid the price?

me

only me

I was punished
for his sins

cursed

I became
a monster

while he
he remained
a god

Athena,
how wise
and virtuous
you must be
to sentence
the victim
and let the
abuser
walk free.

3.

 Scared
_______

go ahead
try
grab me
by my pussy

no
don't look down
no
don't look away
look at me

look at these
hollow pools

look at me
look up
be a man
man up
look at me

look at me
after thousands
of eyes
have undressed
me
I’m still here
look at me
I'm still strong

look at me

after thousands
of minds have
molested me
hundreds of hands
have tried
to cup a feel
why are you
ashamed now

look at me
and tell me
do you really think
you can scare me?

 Waiting
________

aren't we always waiting?
waiting for something to work out
waiting for something to end.

life happens while we are
waiting for it to begin

waiting for it to begin
just so it can end

And it ends
just as we sit there
waiting

waiting to be alive

waiting to just die

waiting for it to
colour our existence
and so
we die
black
and
white.

5.

 Unnatural
_________

such wonderful
times
when we
celebrate when
innocence
is choked
we mourn when
love
finally
wins.

no
shock
disgust
repulsion
over the
murder of
humanity
over the rape
of society

our
shock
disgust
repulsion
is only
reserved
for
seeing
two men
in love.

  1. Hi! I love your poem 'Scared'. The repetition is perfect. The way each thought, each sentence, exhibits a strength from someone wronged, is BEAUTIFUL.
    Keep writing ❤️

  3. The poem “Hindustan” has a great ring to it, but towards the end I thought there would be something more to it. I don’t what more. The play with names seems just right and really brings out the problem of religion identity. Very well.
The repetition in the poem did not work for me. The repetition of the waiting just became annoying after the third time, unless that is what you intended to do.
The poem Hussain really debugged the idea that surrounds Muharram. Thank you for writing this poem. If hussain could see how Muharram is celebrated how, he would kill himself right away. Haha! Good job.

    1. Thank you so much for your input! I will work on it. And, when I had to choose a historical figure, I knew it had to be Hussain, it frustrates me to the core, to see what Muharram has been reduced to by a lot of people, and I just wanted to find a way to remind people of his purpose.
